Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

A specialized research-supported therapy that helps reduce tantrums, improve listening, and strengthen the parent-child bond.

Parenting can be one of the most rewarding parts of life - and one of the most challenging. If your child struggles with frequent tantrums, aggression, or defiance, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) may help.

PCIT teaches parents real-time skills to improve behavior while strengthening connection.

What is PCIT?

PCIT is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed for children ages 2-7 who struggle with behavior challenges such as aggression, defiance, or frequent emotional outbursts. Unlike traditional therapy, PCIT coaches parents live while they interact with their child.

How PCIT Works

During sessions, parents play with their child while a therapist observes and provides real-time coaching through a small earpiece. This allows parents to practice new sills immediately and confidently.

The 2 Phases of PCIT

  1. Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)

Focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship through positive attention and praise.

  2. Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI)

Teaches clear commands, consistent follow-through, and calm discipline strategies.

70-80%

of children show meaningful improvement after completing PCIT!

What Research Shows

Studies consistently show that PCIT significantly reduces aggressive and defiant behaviors. Parents report feeling more confident and less stressed, and improvements often last well beyond the end of treatment.

“When parents change how they respond, children often change too.”

Who is PCIT Best For?

  • Children ages 2-7

  • Children with ADHD or Oppositional Behavior

  • Families experiencing high stress

  • Parents feeling stuck in daily power struggles with their children

What Commitment is Required?

PCIT typically lasts 12-20 weekly sessions. Parents practice skills at home for 5-10 minutes daily to build lasting results.
